Lofts at Saco Falls
Historic Mill to Residential Conversion
Originally intended for demolition by the City of Biddeford, The Lofts at Saco Falls were born out of new ownership with a goal to preserve a vital part of Biddeford’s industrial past and provide high quality rental housing to a city that desperately needs it. The $15 million historic tax credit rehabilitation project encountered no shortage of challenges through its construction, including extensive rot in the carrying beams supporting the first level. Demolishing a 20th century connection building without damaging its adjacent historic buildings, and meticulous repointing of the historic brick facade was an arduous task. The 80-unit building was completely leased out by the end of the first month of availability and received an honor award in the 2017 Maine Preservation Awards.
